The Founder

A BRIEF HISTORY OF IAMI

Prof (Dr) Nanduri Gajanana Rao, B.Sc; M.B; B.S; MNAMS; Ph. D. (Computer Aided Medicine from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and All India Institute of Medical Sciences 1980-1985), conceptualized the idea of founding the IAMI as he felt the necessity for this kind of professional association in India after attending many conferences on Medical Informatics in Europe, UK and USA between 1983 and 1993. He founded Indian Association for Medical Informatics on 18 September 1993 at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, Hyderabad and achieved his aim to bring together professionals of medicine and related fields and those of computer profession in India to build the future of  Healthcare. It was the time when hardly anyone in India knew about any of the computer applications in Medicine other than keeping a record of bed vacancies, out-patient attendances, admissions, discharges, and payments received.

Prof NG Rao was encouraged by few like-minded people who gave their full support in this Herculean Task of forming IAMI, registering it and framing its bylaws, aims and objectives; they were Dr Lele, the internationally known Nuclear Medicine Consultant, Mumbai, Dr RVSS Avadhanulu, Deputy Director, Computer Division, NIMS, Hyderabad, Colonel K. Bhaskara Reddy, General Manager, Medinova Diagnostics, Hyderabad, Mr D. Subba Rao, Head, Computer Section, Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, Prof (Dr) MUR Naidu, Head, Dept of Clinical Pharmacology, NIMS, Colonel T. Dayakar, Medical Superintendent, NIMS, Dr SM Karandikar, Consultant Pharmacologist, Pune, Mr AK Tiwari, Scientist, DRDO, Hyderabad, Dr Lazar Mathew, Director, Bioengineering Labs, DRDO, Bangalore, Dr Kakarla Subba Rao, Director, NIMS, Hyderabad, Prof Khalid Moidu of USA and Prof SK Guha, the internationally known Biomedical Engineer, IIT, Delhi. Dr RD Lele, accepted to be the First President of IAMI (Honorary ).

The first General Body Meeting held during the first National Conference, IAMI-95 at Hyderabad elected Prof NG Rao, as the President, Mr D. Subba Rao as the Secretary and RVSS Avadhanulu as the Treasurer. It also decided to hold the national conferences of the association once in two years in different states of India and to hold workshops and seminars in the alternate years to ensure continuity of the activities of the association. There was a huge response and many doctors, nurses, dentists, scientists, para-medicos and computer professionals as well as a good number of medical institutes, hospitals and nursing homes too joined the IAMI as members from different states of India and few from abroad.

He obtained membership in IMIA (International Medical Informatics Association) in 2007 with the help of Dr EH Shortliffe and Prof Vimla Patel of Columbia University, USA.  IAMI has now in it a very rich academic stronghold with 15 Medical Institutes, Large teaching hospitals, organizations and companies as Institutional Life Members, which include the premier medical institute of India, The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, The Postgraduate Institute for Medical Research, Chandigarh, Nizam’s Institute of Medical sciences, Hyderabad, SGPG Institute, Lucknow, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Amritsar, MNJ Institute of Oncology, Hyderabad, etc. besides 600 individual life members.
